The First Five Year (Member-Exclusive)

Raising a child is one of the most rewarding jobs, but it can also be very challenging. That’s why Infant and Early Mental Health Promotion (IEMHP) is dedicated to providing education and resources that support caregivers (parents, foster parents, family members etc.) in their role. From day one children are discovering the world around them through their relationships with their caregivers. These relationships are the key to all further development and learning. As children grow and develop through infancy, toddlerhood, preschool and up to school entry, they become more confident, curious and independent. While they still need their caregivers close by for guidance and support, they are exploring their feelings and how to express their needs, wants and emotions.

The first five years are the most significant in a child’s growth and development It is the time when caregivers have the most profound influence on a child’s future. In these early years, a child develops the capacity to learn, communicate, love, trust, build positive self-esteem, and skills that will help them succeed in life.

IEMHP takes the latest research, translates the confusing scientific language, and creates resources, like this guide, that are easy-tounderstand, interesting and full of practical activities to help caregivers better understand what to expect as a child grows and what caregivers can do, every day, to support a child’s development. We invite you to use the Comfort, Play & Teach information and activities on these pages in fun and creative ways. Caregivers may soon see that much of what they are already doing is right on target, and will continue to lay the foundation for their child’s healthy development. IEMHP aims to strengthen the parenting knowledge, skills and confidence of all who touch the lives of the youngest children to help ensure their healthy social, emotional and intellectual development.
